Applications are invited for a Research Fellow in – Intelligent Extrusion of Aluminium at Brunel University London.

The Research Fellow will support activities of an extrusion pilot line in BCAST, Brunel University London, within the framework of Materials Made Smarter Research Centre (MMSRC), and in collaboration with Constellium UK. BCAST is one of the world’s largest light metals research centres, hosting the Future Manufacturing LiME Research Hub, a national centre dedicated to lightweighting research, and CircularMetal, an interdisciplinary centre for full metal circulation. See www.brunel.ac.uk/bcast for more information on BCAST. MMSRC is the EPSRC supported Made Smarter Research Centre delivered on behalf of UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) Industry Strategy Challenge Fund. The Centre will deliver multidisciplinary research in the area of Digital Manufacturing. The Centre will work with academic, commercial and innovation partners to drive the research needed to solve many of the fundamental challenges limiting the development and adoption of digital tools in materials and manufacturing. Constellium is a global leader in aluminium lightweight structure supply and developing high performance aluminium alloys. The company has established a University Technology Centre including a dedicated R&D Centre within the campus of Brunel University London to facilitate technology transfer from the laboratory to its production facilities around the world.

The successful candidate will work on the development of a ‘digital twin’ of extrusion-based manufacturing, as part of a cyber-physical system that will allow monitoring, control, and optimisation of process conditions at the material level and across the entire process chain. The work will include setup, implementation, and verification of physics-based models used in combination with data-driven models, to provide an overview of the process chain and the relevant interactions between the steps therein, to predict material properties while considering other aspects such as manufacturability and productivity. The work requires close interaction with the academic and industrial partners within the MMSRC besides other researchers in BCAST and Constellium UK.

Eligibility

The candidate should have a PhD degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field of science or engineering, with a sound background in numerical modelling and finite element analysis (FEA). Research experience in modelling of materials and metallurgical processes, as well as in working with simulation software are essential. In addition, the candidate should have good communication and presentation skills and be a team player.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof. H. Assadi (hamid.assadi@brunel.ac.uk).

Closing date for applications:  22 November 2021
