Applications from suitably qualified and well motivated individuals are invited for the position of Research Fellow to work on development of multi-component alloys as part of the EPSRC funded CircularMetal research programme in BCAST at Brunel University London.
BCAST is a speciality research centre in metallurgy and materials engineering with an international reputation and is the host of the national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering (the Future LiME Research Hub, www.lime.ac.uk ). Our research covers fundamental research, technological development and industrial applications in materials processing, with a focus on solidification of metallic materials. See www.brunel.ac.uk/bcast for more information.
The successful candidate will work on development of high performance metallic materials through multi-component approach. The successful multi-component alloys are expected to be not only high performance but also resilient to changes in chemical composition, processing conditions and service environment. As part of the CircularMetal research team, the successful candidate is expected to interact with other members of the team and participate in other related research projects.
The successful candidate should have (or about to have) a PhD degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field of science or engineering, with a sound background in physical metallurgy and/or phase transformations. Research experience in alloy development and/or solidification research and skills in advanced electron microscopy are essential. The successful candidate should also have good communication and presentation skills and be a team player.
Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof. Z. Fan (zhongyun.fan@brunel.ac.uk)

Meet the Supervisor: Professor Zhongyun Fan
Fan, a Professor of Metallurgy, is the Founder and Director of BCAST at Brunel University. He is the Principal Investigator/Director of the new EPSRC Future LiME Hub, which continues on from his role as the Principal Investigator/Director of the EPSRC Centre – LiME (2010-2015). The Future LiME Hub is a national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering. He obtained his first degree in Metallurgy from University of Science and Technology Beijing and his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from University of Surrey. He started his academic career in 1997 at Brunel University, and prior to this he was a research fellow at University of Oxford and University of Surrey.
